Chaos in Decatur On Friday, three protesters with the Justice for Steve Perkins movement were arrested.
Decatur Police put Steve Perkins’ widow, Catrela, in handcuffs and tried to arrest her after she asked them why they were arresting protesters.
Police Chief Todd Pinion stepped in and walked Catrela Perkins away; minutes later, she was let out of the handcuffs.
Morgan County NAACP chapter president Rodney Gordon says one of the sergeants whispered in his ear that they were going to take him to jail. Video from bystanders captured what Gordon said happened.
Rodney Gordon spoke with us after all this chaos unfolded.
Rodney Gordon said, “So he walked up to me. Okay, I'm on the sidewalk, with two kids holding their hands. He walks up to me and tells me he's going to take you to jail. You're the one leading them; you're the ringleader, and we are going to take you to jail.
And I told him, No, you're not. Yeah, you are, because you're protesting. We’re not protesting; we’re at Third Friday like everyone else. And that's when we instructed people to disperse and go have a good time. Well, he took that as offensive, and he just started arresting people.â€
Gordon spoke about Chief Todd Pinion’s actions in this situation.
Rodney Gordon said, “I saw it when he made them take the handcuffs off Catrela; I respect him for that; he won some points with me then. But I know for a fact that they don't respect him. Because if they did, Renshaw would not have been acting the way that he was. He was out of control. He was totally out of control.â€
The Decatur Police Department released this statement Friday night: “Tonight at 3rd Friday, there was an incident involving some protestors. Three were arrested. There were no injuries, and we’ll be reviewing footage of the incident. We will update as necessary.â€
