The Alabama Fraternal Order of Police is keeping its distance from the developments in Decatur after the family of Steve Perkins filed a federal civil rights lawsuit Tuesday morning.
Everette Johnson, president of the AL FOP, spoke with WAAY 31 on the phone Tuesday. Johnson said the entire case is a tragic situation, but the AL FOP is going to refrain from speaking on the situation and lawsuit until the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency finishes its criminal investigation.
As of Tuesday, Mayor Tab Bowling told WAAY 31 the city has not been served with the lawsuit yet, but once that happens, the city will review it in a timely manner.
Protesters with the Justice for Steve Perkins movement say they are glad to see a lawsuit filed by the Perkins family.
Decatur resident Michael Gaylor added, "Well, everybody has the right to know what’s going on, especially them; they are the ones that need to know right now and then. The city has failed them on that. I’m glad they finally got that information out, and it's really not about anybody else but them.â€
WAAY 31 checked in with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency for an update on its investigation and a comment on the lawsuit filed by the family of Steve Perkins. It says the investigation is ongoing, and there is no comment on the suit.
