Steve Perkins Thanksgiving Vigil

More than a hundred people chose to spend Thanksgiving morning at the Morgan County Courthouse, praying for Steve Perkins and his family.

The cold weather did not stop more than a hundred people from attending a prayer vigil and communion for Steve Perkins Thursday at the Morgan County Courthouse in Decatur.

"The Perkins family is a family of believers," said Claudette Owens, a minister at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church. "We thought it'd be fitting to Steve to start off Thanksgiving Day by commemorating who he is."

Chants of prayer and songs praising God filled the air outside the courthouse.

Rodney Gordon, the president of the Morgan County Chapter of the NAACP, said holding this event was a step toward eventual healing.

"If we're gonna beat this thing, it's going to take longer," said Gordon. "Love will hold us, sustain us."

For Owens, she said seeing the amount of people who skipped watching the Macy's Day Parade or other family activities to come and support their community was touching.

"Decatur, Alabama is still a great place to live," said Owens. "Even though we may be on the different sides of issues and see things differently, we know what we stand on together."

Gordon said the foreseeable future is going to be tough on the entire community and prayer is needed right now.

"We got to stay prayed up [and] continue to feed our spiritual man. Because we're dealing with spiritual wickedness in high places."
