I am pleased to share my Executive Plan with the citizens of Decatur. I want every citizen in our City to know that your police department remains committed to our values; to protect and to serve the community without prejudice or hesitation.
With that being said, I am proud to share my comprehensive plan to help us begin moving forward to become a stronger Decatur. I realize a plan will not solve all our problems, however this is a new beginning to help us come together and to strengthen the trust and relationships within the community.
Here are the six components of my plan:
• Develop a Crisis Management Communication System
• Conduct Structured Sessions with Concerned Citizens
• Conduct a Thorough Review of Current Police Policies and Procedures
• Implement a Support System for Decatur Police Department Leadership
• Implement an Officer Wellness Program
• Secure Confidence in the Comprehensive Plan
I am proud that three of these objectives are already underway. We have hired a communications executive to help us share important information with our community. The Decatur City Council has signed an agreement with a firm to conduct an internal audit, which I welcome. It is always good to examine policies and procedures and make changes where there is room for improvement.
I am also in the process of preparing our structured sessions with our concerned citizens in Decatur. As for Community Listening Sessions, I envision these taking place as soon as possible. I am looking at opportunities for us to do this beginning this fall.
I might add the Citizens Advisory Council will provide crucial input to our forward progress. Their mission is to enhance trust between the community and the police department. They will do so by improving education and dialogue. I have no doubt this will improve public safety for all citizens. This group will provide feedback on policy changes, recruitment, diversity, and discipline.
On a personal note, I plan to make as many public presentations as possible within the next several months.
I will lead the Decatur Police Department based upon the values of honesty and integrity. Together, we can build a stronger Decatur.
