The Decatur Police Department’s internal review into the officer-involved shooting death Steve Perkins is over.
Decatur Police Chief Todd Pinion made the announcement early Thursday afternoon.
Perkins was shot and killed in a Decatur Police officer-involved shooting on Sept. 29 outside his home. Perkins was accused of pointing a handgun equipped with a light at police, causing the officer to fire at Perkins.
Pinion said the internal investigation centers on potential violations of department policy.
“I will soon hold a predetermination hearing to review the internal investigation report and its findings,” Pinion said in a news release.
Pinion said he will share those results likely “within the coming week.”
Pinion says it will be up to Mayor Tab Bowling to administer any disciplinary action if the probe finds policies were violated.
“It is also important to note under Alabama law, a chief of police cannot issue formal discipline regarding his or her officers, which differs from some other state laws,” Pinion said.
“If I find department policy was violated and discipline is warranted, this would be presented to the Office of the Mayor for a determination hearing.
“At that hearing, the mayor would hear the facts of the case and decide if discipline is warranted and to what extent.”
Pinion goes on to say that it will be up to the mayor to determine how and when to release any information to the public.
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s investigation into Perkins’ death continues.
