Decatur police respond to teen suspect turning himself in after deadly shooting at Nash BBQ

The suspect in the shooting turned himself into police Wednesday morning.

Decatur Police got the break they needed Wednesday when the teenage suspect in a deadly weekend shooting turned himself in to them.

Officers arrested the juvenile and charged him with murder for allegedly shooting and killing 18-year-old Deshaun Lewis early Saturday morning. Officers found Lewis with gunshot wounds at approximately 12:12 a.m. in the parking lot of Nash BBQ on 12th Avenue NW. Lewis later died at Decatur Morgan Hospital.

Because the suspect is a juvenile, Police Chief Todd Pinion said there isn't much information he can release. However, he referred to the incident as "tragic."

"It's tragic because it's two juveniles," said Pinion. "One was 18, but he's still a kid. At any time that you have kids involved in any type of gun violence, they don't know the consequences of what's going to be life-altering changes for not only themselves and their families involved. That's what's tragic about it."

Pinion mentioned that officers have responded to 29 calls in that area of 12th Avenue in the last year and indicated investigators are concerned about teen gun violence, which appears to be on the upswing.

"I've been a detective before, been here for over 20 plus years", added Pinion. "That's ebbed and flowed throughout my whole time here. I can say, after speaking with some of the detectives, they feel like there has been a pickup in the last couple years involving juveniles."

The teen charged with murder in this case has been transferred to a Juvenile Detention Facility. Detectives are still investigating the circumstances of the shooting.
