Steve Perkins prayer vigil

Hundreds of people gathered in Decatur Thursday night for a vigil following the deadly police-involved shooting of Steve Perkins.

People who came out said it's about showing support, solidarity and remembering Perkins, but also fighting for justice.

Steve's brother Nicholas attended the vigil with other family members. He says the support has been overwhelming.

"My family and I, my sister-in-law, we are very grateful. This is an event that has happened like none other in Decatur," said Nicolas.

He calls this moment in time historic and demands swift change.

"New leadership, new policies, new procedures. Something has to give. This happens to much across the country," said Nicolas.

People of all ages came out with a little something to say.

Rodney Gordon's tone was pure frustration.

"The police have a universal motto everywhere, to go home when the shift is over. Well, everybody went home, except for the man who is at home," said Gordon.

Young Nivea Owens was there to take it all in.

"Tonight was really inspirational and really sweet and really sad. I knew a lot of people. A lot of people knew him. A lot of people loved him and stuff like that," said Owens.

All in all, it was a clear impassioned push for justice and remembering a man who died in his front yard. His brother hopes he's remembered for who he truly was.

"Who was Steve Perkins? Never met a stranger, coolest. Dude you'd ever want to meet," said Nicolas.

He says it is only by the grace of god that they are getting through this unimaginable time.
