Â鶹´«Ã½ Police are conducting traffic safety checkpoints May 2nd - 4th in honor of Kathrynn Lively who was killed in August 2022 after she was hit by a drunk driver on her motorcycle.

Tamara Lively says her daughter Kathrynn was on her way to pick up a dress her grandmother altered to fit her. But when she didn't pick it up, her family knew something was wrong.

"She was driving her motorcycle and a person who had been drinking and driving I guess just pulled out in front of her and she couldn’t stop and that was it," Lively said.

It was news no mother wants to hear.

“You can’t breathe, you want it to be wrong," Lively said, "time stops."

Sgt. Antonio Shorter from the Â鶹´«Ã½ Police Department's DUI task force emphasized the importance of making safe decisions before getting behind the wheel.

"Kathrynn would still be here if somebody would’ve made a better decision," Sgt. Shorter said. "That’s the whole point of the checkpoints, that’s the whole point of us doing this that’s why we’re here."

Â鶹´«Ã½ will have eight traffic safety checkpoints to deter impaired driving. Drivers stopped at these checkpoints should be ready to present their driver's license, proof of insurance, and vehicle registration.

"We are a zero tolerance when it comes to impaired driving," Sgt. Shorter said. "If you come through our checkpoint and you have the signs of impairment, you will go to jail."

Lively urges drivers to consider the impact of their actions before making a decision they could come to regret.

"Think about your family, think about your children, your parents, if something happens to you, what will it do to them," Lively asked. "I don’t want anybody else to feel like this."
