Powerball and Mega Millions jackpots have been inching up, even exploding over the past couple of years, topping $1 billion on occasion. Tuesday night, Mega Millions was in that neighborhood. And while the buzz may not be packing the parking lots at the Tennessee state line, the excitement is still there.
The lottery stores along Highway 431 were packed last weekend. Tuesday, it was more of an even flow as customers arrived to take their shot at Mega Millions. Delvecchio Blackburn drove up from Â鶹´«Ã½. He's never played Mega Millions before. What brought him this time?
"740 million brought me, at least to try," said Blackburn. "740 million is a lot."
Steve Riggins lives just down the road in Hazel Green. "Yeah, I've just seen the billboards, 700-something million, so I came here to try my luck," said Riggins. "I bought a few tickets. You never know."
Even with the higher jackpots, business has steadily grown at the state line lottery stops, so much so that they're constantly trying to hire new workers to keep pace.
Still, there's not as much talk about the higher jackpots. Blackburn figures there's little talk, but still lots of action.
"A lot of people don't want you to know they're gambling like that, or they look at it as that," said Blackburn. "I just look at it as numbers."
"It's still a big wow factor," said Riggins. "Usually when it gets high, it goes even higher. So, it's always if you have a few dollars, get a ticket."
Most of the customers we saw were buying scratch off tickets... But most of the time, there were Mega Millions or Powerball tickets included in the purchase.
Blackburn admits he's a rookie at Mega Millions. But win or not win, will he buy again?
"Yeah, when it gets to a billion," said Blackburn. "I'll try it again. Anything over 500 million, I'm trying at least once."
It's still too early to know if anyone won the jackpot. If not, it will roll over to Friday. Powerball's drawing is Wednesday, and it could roll over to Saturday. People I talked with say they expect business to keep going up with Powerball and Mega Millions tickets and scratch off tickets to all be bought in bulk over the next couple of days as stocking stuffers for Christmas.
