A confirmed EF-1 tornado touched down in Tuscumbia this weekend, leaving much damage and destruction behind.
The tornado impact on downtown Tuscumbia was particularly intense. A roof was completely ripped off, and there are trees and power lines down all through the city.
According to the National Â鶹´«Ã½ Service, the tornado touched down near the intersection of Lamar Road and Frankfort Road in Tuscumbia at a speed of 105 miles per hour. That path was two miles long, uprooting trees and tearing down power lines and traffic lights.
There is also damage in neighborhoods near downtown and even the R.E. Thompson Intermediate School. Colbert County EMA officials say it’s going to take some time to get everything back to normal.
Keith Reeves, grant manager at Colbert County EMA, said, “It’s still going to be a while for a complete cleanup and back to normal. I don’t think we’re looking at months, but we’re probably looking at some weeks to get everything back.â€
Several areas are blocked off downtown, and officials in Tuscumbia are urging people not to come downtown as it's dangerous. Crews were on the ground cleaning up all day Sunday and will be continuing in the coming days. EMA officials say power has been restored downtown, but some traffic lights were impacted, so if you come to a stoplight, treat it as a four-way stop.
