A man was booked into the Madison County Jail Saturday after Â鶹´«Ã½ police say he stabbed his roommate, stole his phone, then led officers on a high-speed chase.

Jail records show 37-year-old Willie Gardner is charged with robbery, aggravated assault, and attempting to elude police.

The initial incident occurred at an apartment on the 4400 block of Torrance Drive moments before the pursuit. Police say the assault began as an argument between Gardner and a roommate, then escalated to Gardner stabbing the victim several times with a knife.

Police say Gardner then took the victim’s cell phone to prevent him from calling 911 and fled the area.

The victim was able to make it to a neighbor’s residence and call 911.

When officers arrived, they found blood in the residence but could not find the victim and simultaneously saw a white Camaro leaving the area.

Additional officers en route spotted the Camaro and attempted to stop it while officers on Torrance Drive were still trying to locate the victim.

Police say Gardner refused to stop and at one point, officers disengaged the pursuit due to his driving.

Gardner was eventually stopped and charged.

The victim was located and taken to the hospital where he is recovering.
