Leaders in Marshall County are working to figure out how to spend more than $1 million.

Sheriff Phil Sims said the almost $1.5 million comes from the state's settlement in an opioid lawsuit.

According to Sims, leaders discussed creating an oversight committee during the Grant Chamber of Commerce Breakfast last week.

"So we decided we would have this meeting," Sims said. "Get the cities involved. Get the county involved and see how can we spend this money most effectively for the people in Marshall County."

He said they must spend money on the opioid crisis in the community.

They plan to focus on three areas: treatment, prevention and education.

"It's gonna be a three-pronged approach," Sims said. "That's how we are gonna test each project that is brought to us."

The committee will accept proposals from agencies in the county that could use the funds.

This includes school resource officers, mental health providers and nonprofits.

"These projects will be a county-wide-type projects that will benefit everyone. I think that's a big thing," Sims said. "I don't think you see a lot of cooperation in different areas but here in Marshall County everybody is on one page, everybody is working together for the common good."

He said the committee plans to meet again in the next two months.

It will let the community know when it is accepting proposals for the funds.
