Steve Perkins' widow speaks on 1 year anniversary of deadly shooting

This weekend marks one year since Decatur's Steve Perkins was shot and killed by police in his front yard during an attempted car repossession. That case garnered national attention.

Dozens of protests in the River City, people speaking out during city council meetings, and division among residents are just some of the things that have happened in the aftermath of the deadly shooting.

Perkins’ widow, Catrela, says she rarely goes back to the house she shared with Steve and her daughters. Catrela Perkins says it does not feel like it's been a year since her husband was killed by Decatur police.

It's been such a tough year for her and her family. She says she dreads going back to her house, where the deadly shooting took place.

Catrela Perkins said, “You know it's almost been a year and I’m sitting in my home, which I haven’t really stayed in since September 29th. Every time I come here, it's a feeling of sadness. Because it's the home we shared, and he’s no longer here. All the memories—everything is here. So it's hard coming back here. It's definitely hard.â€

Catrela Perkins says she stays strong for her daughters, but the memories of what happened creep up on her.

“The horrors from last year never left," said Catrela Perkins. "You know that's something when it's quiet at night and I'm laying in bed. You know I think of that every single night. On September 29th. But as the days get closer, I start to replay the events as they happened one by one.â€

Bailey Marquette is the former officer who has been charged with murder in this case, and his trial was moved back. It's now officially set for April 7.
