An alleged North Alabama child predator charged and back on the streets. A grand jury indicted Joseph Luna of Florence on 385 counts of possession of obscene matter containing visual depiction of persons under 17 years of age involved in obscene acts.

The Florence Police Department says they recovered multiple electronic devices from Luna’s apartment containing hundreds of files of obscene material.

Sgt. Ryan Kelly with the police department says these criminals are everywhere, but as technology advances, law enforcement is able to get more of these alleged predators off the streets and behind bars.

“They’ll eventually get caught,� Kelly said. “The software companies, the internet providers, they have software that looks for this stuff and if they detect that, then they’re going to submit it to the local authorities for review and prosecution.�

Luna was arrested Monday and transported to the Lauderdale County Detention Center. He has since been released on a $50,000 bond.

Lt. James DiStefano with the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Office says child pornography has always been a problem but with technology advancing, everything has become more accessible.

In his decade of experience at One Place of the Shoals dealing with sex crimes, he says now is the easiest time to take advantage of children online.

“It seems like younger and younger children now have smart phones that have access to the internet,� DiStefano said. “Anytime you have access to the internet, now you’re in the playground of child predators.�

DiStefano says now is the time to teach your children about the dangers of the internet so you can warn them before it's too late.

“There are so many different apps and it seems like everyday there’s another one created but all of those things can be monitored if you’re vigilant and watching what your children are doing on their phone,� DiStefano said.
