ALEA asks for patience in probe of officer-involved shooting death of Steve Perkins in Decatur

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is asking for patience as it investigates the deadly officer-involved shooting of Steve Perkins.

Perkins, 39, was shot and killed Sept. 29 after the Decatur Police Department responded to a call in the 3,000 block of Ryan Drive.

Law enforcement said Perkins pointed a gun, which was equipped with a light, toward an officer. They said this caused an officer to fire his weapon at Perkins.

As is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings, ALEA’s State Bureau of Investigation took over the probe.

In the days since, citizens have called for the release of police bodycam footage and taken part in peaceful protests and vigils. Neighbors in the area of the shooting also have released their doorcam videos of the shooting.

The Alabama Department of Forensic Science is conducting an autopsy of Perkins, which ALEA said had not been completed as of Friday.

In a Friday news release, ALEA asked for patience during “a very thorough and methodical investigation.â€
