The Morgan County Sheriff's Office has identified the suspect killed in a law enforcement-involved shooting on Monday.
Drew Patterson Banks, 41, of Decatur was shot after leading authorities on a chase and waving a gun, according to officials.
According to the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office, a traffic stop on a reported stolen vehicle was initiated by the Priceville Police Department. The vehicle fled and led multiple agencies on chase along Highway 67, I-65 and I-565 before returning to Morgan County.
During the pursuit, the sheriff’s office says the subject waved a firearm numerous times. The vehicle made contact with a sheriff’s office patrol unit and eventually stopped on Thompson Road at Bryd Road.
“Once it got to the Thompson road exit, it exited where the vehicle was spiked, continued to travel for a short distance, before stopping where the suspect exited the car firing at law enforcement who returned fire,†Mike Swafford with the Morgan County Sheriff's Office said. Â
The driver was the only person in the vehicle. No one else was hurt in the incident.
One deputy with the Morgan County Sheriff's Office and two Priceville Police Officers are on paid administrative leave. Swafford says this is standard protocol for these types of investigations.
“We don’t have a lot of these thankfully but unfortunately it’s right here at Christmas so it just has an extra weight to it," Swafford said, "this is not what we’re supposed to be dealing with but unfortunately as we tell the people in our agency, this stuff can happen at anytime and we have to be prepared, and that’s why we train regularly.â€
SBI with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is now investigating this incident.Â
