A Morgan County Jail corrections officer is in the hospital after being attacked by an inmate.

The Morgan County Sheriff's Office says the officer received non-life-threatening injuries.

The sheriff's office says Jason Oneal Stovall, 41 of Decatur broke the sprinkler head in his cell causing it to flood the floor. He was moved and isolated in the rec yard so the cell could be cleaned and for maintenance to repair the sprinkler head.

Once repairs were complete, a corrections officer told Stovall to exit the rec yard and return to his cell.

Initially complying, the sheriff's office said Stovall walked toward the open door but then violently struck the officer in the head and continued to attempt to beat him.

The inmate was tazed, with little effect and finally subdued when additional officers arrived, authorities said.

Investigators are charging Stovall with assault. Bond was set at $250,000.

He is currently in the Morgan County Jail on homicide charges with a bond of $100,000.
