Decatur Planning Commission votes to move forward on renaming street in honor of Steve Perkins

The Decatur Planning Commission voted unanimously Tuesday night to move forward on the process of renaming a street to Steve Perkins Drive.

A resident living on Ryan Drive, the street where Steve Perkins lived when a Decatur Police officer killed him in Sept. 2023, started a petition to get the roadway renamed.

In order to rename the street, 75% of residents living on it have to sign off on the name change. The resident who started the petition says she's currently lacking three names to reach that percentage.

On Tuesday evening, the Decatur Planning Commission went ahead with a vote on the renaming process, unanimously agreeing to send the proposal through to the Decatur City Council once the 75% threshold is met.

The Decatur City Council is set to meet for a work session on April 28 and will reconvene for a council meeting on May 5.
