One person dressed all in black removed the Steve Perkins memorial from in front of Decatur City Hall early Sunday morning.

Decatur police are still working to identify the person. Police say the removal was not authorized by anyone at the Police Department or the Mayor's Office.

Community members in Decatur worked Christmas Eve on a new memorial display.

Yesterday, our crews were there when people showed up in disbelief. All that was left of the memorial was broken glass and flowers.

Some are taking extra steps to ensure the memorial does not get removed again. Decatur resident Brittany Malone says she was outside city hall at 3:30 a.m. Christmas morning to keep watch of the newly replaced memorial.

She told WAAY 31, “It is really disrespectful; it just shows what kind of person you are, like, why would you mess with someone's memorial?" Malone said, “Hopefully the wreath will show back up and the pictures will show back up as well. We are still praying for justice for Steve Perkins, and we're praying for the best.

Decatur Police ask anyone with any information about who removed the memorial to come forward.
