Tracking Winter Âé¶¹´«Ã½: Here's the latest on road conditions across North Alabama

Some roads across North Alabama still have the potential to be hazardous Sunday as a result of Friday's winter weather, according to officials. 

This is due to refreezing of melted snow on roadways.

Please see below for the latest on conditions. We will continue to keep this list updated throughout the weekend:

Colbert County

  • 3 p.m. ALEA update: All roadways are clear with no travel problems.
  • 9:35 a.m. ALEA update: State and Federal roads have been graded and/or salted by ALDOT and seem to be passable with a few icy spots. Bridges and overpasses have icy spots. County roads have not been treated and therefore are still covered in snow/ice and are considered impassable.
  • 6:55 a.m. ALEA update: State and Federal roads have been graded and/or salted by ALDOT and seem to be passable with some slick spots. County roads have not been treated and therefore are still covered in snow/ice and are considered impassable.

DeKalb County

  • 3:20 p.m. ALEA update: All roadways are clear with no travel problems.
  • 6:45 a.m. ALEA update: All state and federal roads have no issues. All county roads are icy.
  • 2:12 a.m. EMA update: DEKALB COUNTY ROADS continue to be hazardous with many snow covered areas, especially in shaded and protected areas. Roadways are NOT safe for normal highway travel. Motorists choosing to travel should do so with extreme caution. ALABAMA STATE ROADS has been treated and cleared in large portions by Alabama DOT; however there are some areas on the mountain tops where large areas of slush or ice may be encountered, especially bridges. INTERSTATE 59 has been treated and cleared in large; however bridges and overpasses may continue to have icy spots due to freezing fog and remaining water from snow melt. FORT PAYNE CITY streets are clear with limited spots of slush and some slick spots.

Franklin County

  • 3 p.m. ALEA update: All roadways are clear with no travel problems.
  • 9:35 a.m. ALEA update: Most State and Federal roads have been graded and/or salted by ALDOT and seem to be passable with a few icy spots. Bridges and overpasses have icy spots. County roads have not been treated and therefore are still covered in snow/ice and are considered impassable. Alabama 243 from Rail Splitter Road to County Road 79 is still icy.
  • 6:55 a.m. ALEA update: Most State and Federal roads have been graded and/or salted by ALDOT and seem to be passable with some slick spots. County roads have not been treated and therefore are still covered in snow/ice and are considered impassable. Alabama 243 is very slick in mostly shaded areas and was not treated with salt and graded as much as the other roadways.

Jackson County

  • 3:20 p.m. ALEA update: All roadways are clear with no travel problems.
  • 6:45 a.m. ALEA update: All state and federal roads have no issues. All county roads are icy.

Lauderdale County

  • 3 p.m. ALEA update: All roadways are clear with no travel problems.
  • 10 a.m. EMA update: Main roads are clear. Patchy ice remains on secondary roads. Slow clearing expected today. Drive with caution. 
  • 9:35 a.m. ALEA update: State and Federal roads have been graded and/or salted by ALDOT and seem to be passable with a few icy spots. Bridges and overpasses have icy spots. County roads have not been treated and therefore are still covered in snow/ice and are considered impassable.
  • 6:55 a.m. ALEA update: State and Federal roads have been graded and/or salted by ALDOT and seem to be passable with some slick spots. County roads have not been treated and therefore are still covered in snow/ice and are considered impassable.
  • 6 a.m. EMA update: Black ice is present on some roads this morning. Thankfully, the temps hovered right at freezing overnight and did not drop into the 20's in most areas. This has kept roads wet in most areas and lessened the black ice on most main roads. As daylight breaks, use caution on the roads. there is still a lot of snow/slush and many secondary roads remain snow covered. We will start driving the county after daybreak and provide updates throughout the day. 
  • 4:32 a.m. EMA update: Hazardous (slick) travel conditions exist to include black ice on roadways throughout Lauderdale County. Avoid travel if possible.

Lawrence County

  • 3 p.m. ALEA update: All roadways are clear with no travel problems.
  • 9:35 a.m. ALEA update: State and Federal roads have been graded and/or salted by ALDOT and seem to be passable with a few icy spots. Bridges and overpasses have icy spots. County roads have not been treated and therefore are still covered in snow/ice and are considered impassable.
  • 6:55 a.m. ALEA update: State and Federal roads have been graded and/or salted by ALDOT and seem to be passable with some slick spots. County roads have not been treated and therefore are still covered in snow/ice and are considered impassable.

Limestone County

  • 9:40 p.m. ALEA update: Alabama 251 at Lindsey Lane is iced over
  • 3:20 p.m. ALEA update: All roadways are clear with no travel problems.
  • 6:45 a.m. ALEA update: All state and federal roads have no issues. All county roads are icy.

Madison County

  • 7 p.m. update from HPD: Bankhead Parkway, specifically from Gaslight Way to Fern Street is closed.
  • 3:20 p.m. ALEA update: All roadways are clear with no travel problems.
  • 3 p.m. update from HPD: Bankhead Parkway, specifically from Gaslight Way to Fern Street is closed.
  • 9:40 a.m. update from HPD: Bankhead Parkway and access from Chapman to I-565 are still closed.
  • 9 a.m. update from HPD: Bankhead Parkway, overpasses and bridges on Memorial Parkway, access from Chapman to I-565, and westbound lane I-565 to Memorial Parkway ramp are all still closed.
  • 8:03 a.m. update from City of Madison: Road conditions across the City of Madison continue to improve. Eastview as well as Stoneway Trail are now open. All roads are clear with very minor patches of ice on County Line Road. Please proceed with caution.
  • 7:30 a.m. update from HPD: Access from Chapman to I-565 and westbound lane I-565 to Memorial Parkway ramp are now closed. Overpasses and bridges on Memorial Parkway and Bankhead Parkway are still closed as well.
  • 7:15 a.m. update from HPD: Overpasses and bridges on Memorial Parkway are now closed. Bankhead Parkway is still closed as well.
  • 6:55 a.m. update from HPD: We're starting to see ice forming on overpasses and bridges. These areas freeze faster than regular roadways, creating slick and potentially hazardous conditions.

What you should do:

Slow down: Reduce your speed when approaching bridges and overpasses.

Drive cautious: Avoid sudden braking or steering to maintain control.

Stay alert: Watch for black ice, especially in shaded areas.

Increase distance: Keep extra space between you and the vehicle ahead.

Stay safe and alert as you travel.

The roads may look fine, but icy patches can form unexpectedly.

  • 6:45 a.m. ALEA update: All state and federal roads have no issues. All county roads are icy.
  • 6:30 a.m. update from HPD: Bankhead Parkway is closed. We urge all residents to exercise EXTREME caution if travel is necessary.
  • 5:15 a.m. update from the City of Madison: Several overpasses and bridges in Madison are becoming slick. Please use extreme caution if you are on the roadways. Public works is currently treating these areas.

Marshall County

  • 3:20 p.m. ALEA update: All roadways are clear with no travel problems.
  • 6:45 a.m. ALEA update: All state and federal roads have no issues. All county roads are icy.
  • 5:40 a.m. EMA update: The main roads throughout the county are looking better but the secondary roads still have some hazardous travel issues in spots. We are asking everyone to use caution if you need to travel.

Morgan County

  • 3:20 p.m. ALEA update: All roadways are clear with no travel problems.
  • 6:45 a.m. ALEA update: All state and federal roads have no issues. All county roads are icy.
